One of the main responsibilities of the Marine Unit is monitoring temporal and spatialchanges in coastal habitats. Habitats such as coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves and beaches are monitored annually using standard protocols. Under certain circumstances, such as boat groundings, oil spills or any other impacts that could cause adverse effects, habitats are specially assessed for any damage incurred.
The Marine Unit also oversees the sea turtle monitoring programme. The in-water monitoring requires staff to actually catch turtles so they can be tagged with flipper and PIT tags, measured and sampled for their genetic makeup. The nesting turtle monitoring requires staff to regularly survey nesting beaches for any activity and in the event a turtle is found nesting, it is tagged, measured and sampled.
