Darwin Initiative Assessment of the Coastal Biodiversity of Anegada, British Virgin Islands

The UK Government, through its Darwin Initiative, has recently supported a project which, allowed the gathering of information which, in addition to the local knowledge and views of Anegadians, fed into the drafting of a Biodiversity Action Plan for Anegada. Preliminary the Island and waters of Anegada are of unparalleled biological importance within the Caribbean region; a jewel of biodiversity.

The three main natural grouping investigated in great detail as was sea turtles, plants and birds; a diverse array of subjects which needed a diverse project team. The project was co-ordinated by the Marine Turtle Research Group based at the University of Wales, Swansea in the UK and BVI partners included BVI National Parks Trust, Conservation and Fisheries Department, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and the Office of the Governor. Additional UK based specialist input on plants and birds came from Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

The initiative worked with the Anegadian tourist sector by offering ongoing information updates and a training workshop in ecotourism and environmental tour guiding which was envisioned to contribute towards the sustainable use of natural resources and helping the local economy.

CD Atlas  The British Virgin Islands CD Atlas

The National Geographic Information System (GIS) Technical Steering Committee, is a mutual effort amongst 15 government agencies and statutory bodies to meet on a monthly basis to share data and collaborate on GIS projects.  The Committee has recently been notified that they will be the recipients of a £UK40,150.00 grant from the UK Government’s Overseas Territories Environment Program (OTEP) to help complete the BVI Environmental CD Atlas & Teaching Resource.
The main goal of the CD atlas will be to help enhance the current BVI environment and geography curriculum by merging available geographic data (e.g. computer based maps) and combining it with digital photos and descriptive text of local areas on such topics as basic geography, the environment, historic sites, transportation, population, the economy, social information, topography, etc.
When completed, the Atlas will be distributed to all schools in the Territory on CD-Rom and in hard copy format.
